At once elegant and robust, the design draws inspiration from the unique character of its dynamic landscape, echoing the gentle curves of nearby streets and the rhythmic flow of its rich cultural offerings.

Alma Square's architectural design brings tactile elegance and visual sophistication to the winding boulevards of North Perth. Thoughtfully woven into the vibrant streetscape, Alma Square offers a contemporary reinterpretation of North Perth’s distinctive urban character. Crafted from enduring materials like brick, concrete and metal, these elements thoughtfully echo the surrounding architecture while establishing a modern and sophisticated presence.

A carefully composed symphony
of enduring materiality.

The façade is defined by asymmetrical recesses that create depth and dimension whilst cascading greenery gently softens its sculpted form. Set aback from the street, the upper level creates a subtle floating effect, ensuring the building remains striking without overwhelming its surroundings. Expansive glazing frames soaring vistas, allowing natural light to illuminate the interiors and become an integral feature within the residences. The integrated landscaping fosters a tranquil atmosphere that is perfectly attuned with North Perth. Evoking a true sense of place, Alma Square is harmoniously connected to its natural surrounds.

Explain the brief assigned to Alma Square.

The brief for Alma Square was to balance its civic location and increase housing in North Perth. The design needed to reflect the area's heritage character, blending residential and commercial elements. Perth is currently undergoing significant urban transformation, and the development team felt strongly about ensuring the building genuinely responds to its surroundings—a building that embodies the “North Perth flavour,” as it was referred to in one of our design sessions.

What inspired the architectural design?

Alma Square's design merges North Perth's eclectic architecture into a cohesive "collection of buildings." Ground-level shopfronts settle within existing structures, while the façade echoes traditional materials like brick, referencing 1950s residential styles. The building harmonises with North Perth’s architectural heritage and offers a modern vision, connecting past and future through material and urban expression.

Describe the unique features of the residences.

The residences cater to various lifestyles, with larger spaces for downsizers and compact configurations for professionals. Open-plan living areas connect to outdoor spaces and are designed to optimise natural light with cross-flow ventilation. Large openings on the façade enhance the connection to the outdoors, supporting efficient, vibrant and flexible living.

How does the architectural façade and interior spaces work with the landscape?

The interior mirrors the architectural façade, using vertical proportions and framing to integrate with landscaped areas. Timber details and curved fixtures create spatial tension. Communal amenities foster seamless transitions between the interior and exterior, providing tranquillity in landscaped spaces and a connection to Perth’s skyline and vibrant city life.
